É uma questão racial?/Is it a racial matter?

This question came to my mind while reading the paper today.

In today's International edition of Helsingin Sanomat, a report calls "White Flight" (as in the US and other countries) a phenomenon that the local government is trying to avoid: the decision of each time more families in Helsinki of avoiding schools with a high rate of immigrants. The term is rather misleading. It may be that you think it is an essential racial issue, right? It may be that you consider, even if deep within yourself, that these families are racist, right? Well. Lables reduce. Simplify what must not be simplified.

It may be prejudice of some. Maybe. It may be the low performance of the children of others. Maybe. It may be that the schooling has been damaged by the extra attention that needs to be given to those who do not speak fluent properly. Maybe. It may be that the school can't handle the cultural differences. Maybe.

It may be so much other than ethno-racial issues (in the socio-theoretical nature of the term "White flight").

It may be the matter of balancing cultural and ethnic groups within schools in all regions and not only in specific areas. Like it was done when neighborhoods and buildings were created for many Finns with problematic family backgrounds (unemployed, etc.). Like it was done when many foreigners started to come and being placed on specific regions in the capital.

The mixture may be good. In global times, children need to grow used to differences. It may also be bad, though. Bad if not dealt with care and conducted with caution and information. Bad if the reactions remain being labled simply as matters of prejudice and racial segregation as the newspaper did (and the government hasn't been doing).

Crianças esperam. Kids wait.
